Regardless of this economy, Japa is still a top priority on most of our list. And sometimes you just have to lie your way through the airport.
A survey by the African Polling Institute in 2022 reported that 70% of Nigerians aged 18-35 interviewed said they would relocate if given the opportunity. Now imagine how many percent will want to japa in 2025.
Are you already out of the country, or is Japa top of your list? Here are a few lies Nigerians tell at the airport.
Let’s get into it. You’ll definitely learn one or two things.
The Bag is Not Heavy

Classic Lie! lol. The bag is not heavy, but you had to sit on it before you could zip it. Now you’re wondering how the required 20kg has turned into 28kg.
Na Just Short Visit

I call this one the sweetheart lie because you don’t want the person to miss you too much so you say you’ll be back next month, meanwhile “nah just short visit, I’ll be back next month” equals to 5 years, and a British accent.

Omo! I don’t Have Cash

One of the most told lies in Naija airport. You actually need to master the art of this lie so as not to drain your pocket from all the “bros anything for your boy” and the “fine sister show me some love”.
False Destination (Nobody’s Going To Know)

As a wise man once said, “Fake it till you make it”. Because tell me how your flight ticket has DEL (Delhi) India, but your IG story is telling us you’re on your way to ATL (Atlanta), USA. Nice One!

I’m Not Carrying Anything For Anybody

Says the person carrying 4 packs of smoked fish, 2 wraps of egusi, and a small bag of foodstuff for that uncle or aunt. Be careful who you help transport foodstuffs, and check thoroughly before accepting. This can be a very costly lie in the case of drug movement.
From lying to avoid draining your pocket to lying the sweetheart lie so your friends and family don’t miss you much, sometimes lying is the only option you have, other times, you just choose to.
Now don’t lie, which of the lies above will you be using the next time you’re at the airport? Tell us in the Japa Community, and also read what other air travellers like you have to say.
