Nigerian universities are some of the finest in Africa, you could even refer to them as the Nigerian Ivy Leagues. 

While the idea of “Nigerian Ivy Leagues” might be debatable, a closer review would show that some of our Nigerian universities have proved themselves to be worth their weight; with expertise across various disciplines, producing graduates who have not only excelled in their fields but have also contributed significantly to research and development in the country. 

These universities are also known for highly selective/competitive admissions, academic excellence and maybe a little bit of social elitism, all of which contribute to their esteemed status.

Bayero University Kano (BUK)

Initially named Ahmadu Bello College after the then Premier of Northern Nigeria, Ahmadu Bello, the university was founded in January 1960 as an initiative to prepare senior secondary certificate holders for General Certificate of Education (G.C.E.) and A-level in Arabic, Hausa, Islamic History, Islamic studies and English Literature. 

Over time, the institution evolved and in 1975 was upgraded from Bayero university College to Bayero University Kano. The institution ranked 1016 in the world universities ranking in 2023.

University Of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
